Detroit doesn't do background music — this is Motown, and the floor knows it. I'm DJ SKAN, born-and-raised in the D, and for over a decade I've been reading rooms from downtown ballrooms to Corktown lofts. A real local, a diverse dance floor, and a night the D will remember.
Detroit couples want a party with soul, and they can spot an out-of-town vendor from the first song. This is my city — I grew up on the same Motown, hip-hop and house that fills these dance floors, so as your Detroit wedding DJ and Master of Ceremony I'm not guessing at what moves the room, I already know. My job is to blend the eras and genres your guest list actually spans, keep the mic sharp, and run your timeline so cleanly that you never once glance at the clock.
When you book me, you book me — Tevin, the person you plan with, not a name pulled off an agency roster. I only take one wedding per date, so from our first call to the last song of the night, your celebration has my full attention. No hand-offs, no strangers, no chance-taking — just a hometown pro who has your back.
Detroit packs more range into one city than anywhere in the metro, and I've played across all of it. On the grand side, The Whitney, the Detroit Athletic Club and the Gem Theatre deserve real, full-bodied sound and lighting that honors the architecture instead of flattening it. Along the water, the Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle and the riverfront rooms off Jefferson give you skyline-and-water views that beg for the right soundtrack at golden hour.
Then there's the Detroit that's exploded lately — the industrial-chic side. Eastern Market sheds and the raw Corktown and Rivertown lofts are stunning, but bare brick and open ceilings need a full PA I bring myself and uplighting that warms the space so it photographs like a magazine. Whether your night is a downtown gala off Woodward or a loft party in Midtown, I scout power, load-in and sightlines ahead of time so setup is invisible and the room simply comes alive.
This is the moment everyone traveled downtown for, so the sound has to be perfect. I set discreet speakers and crisp wireless mics so your vows carry to the last row without a crackle — whether you're under the chandeliers at The Whitney, along the Riverwalk, or in an open Eastern Market shed where the acoustics fight back. I cue your processional, your first kiss and your walk back up the aisle right on the beat, so every second feels intentional.
While you're off grabbing photos with the skyline behind you and your guests are settling in with a drink, the room still needs a pulse. I keep it smooth and soulful — a little Motown, some easy current picks, the kind of groove that has people nodding before they even realize it. It's the bridge between your ceremony and the party, and it keeps the energy warm right up until your grand entrance drops.
Here's where a Detroit crowd separates a real DJ from a playlist: this city has techno and house in its DNA and Motown in its heart, and the dance-floor bar is high. I handle your grand entrance, first dance, toasts and cake cutting with clean, confident mic work — then I open the floor and read the room in real time, blending generation to generation and culture to culture so grandparents and cousins are out there at the same time. Your must-plays get played, your do-not-plays never happen, and nobody drifts back to their table.
In a dense downtown vendor market, being the real thing matters — a hometown DJ who knows the rooms, reads the crowd and shows up for you.
I'm from the D, not passing through it. I know these venues, these crowds and this music — so your night sounds like Detroit, not a wedding anywhere.
The DJ you plan with is the DJ behind the booth. No bait-and-switch, no agency middleman — just one person you can hand the whole night to.
Motown to hip-hop to house to Top 40, one culture to the next — I blend eras and genres live so every guest hears their song.
I never double-book. Your date is mine alone, which means unhurried setup, backup gear on hand and full focus start to finish.
Two clear options, everything you need in each, and no nickel-and-diming. I coordinate closely with you and your Detroit venue and vendors so the whole night runs beautifully from load-in to last call.

Ceremony, Cocktail Hour & Reception
Want the “wow” the moment guests walk in? Uplighting transforms a room — and in a raw Corktown loft or a cavernous Eastern Market shed, the right color wash is exactly what turns bare brick into your ballroom and makes the photos pop. Pick a scheme that matches your florals and linens. Starting at $399, it's the easiest add-on with the biggest payoff.

Detroit is home — the D is my base, not a trip. I DJ weddings all over the city and Metro Detroit constantly, from downtown ballrooms and the riverfront to Corktown, Midtown and Eastern Market lofts. There's no long-distance surcharge for a wedding in my own city.
Yes — I've worked grand historic ballrooms, hotel and club rooms, and raw loft spaces all across Detroit. Before your date I confirm the specifics of your exact venue, from load-in and power to sound limits and layout, and coordinate with their event team so my setup is invisible and everything runs on time. Raw loft spaces get a full PA I bring myself.
That's exactly what I do best. This is Motown — music is identity here. I blend Motown, R&B, hip-hop, house and Top 40, and I'm comfortable weaving in the traditions and requests that make a multicultural guest list feel seen. I read the floor live and keep every generation dancing at once.
Always. I'm an owner-operator, not an agency — the person you plan with is the person behind the booth at your wedding. I only take one wedding per date, so your night gets my full focus from setup to the last song.
Yes. I'm your DJ and your Master of Ceremony. I run the mic for your grand entrance, toasts, dances and cake cutting with clean, confident announcements, and I keep your timeline flowing so you can relax and actually enjoy your own wedding.
Prime Detroit dates go fast — Saturdays from May through October and New Year's Eve downtown book up first, often a year or more out. If your date matters, reach out early so I can hold it before someone else does.
